The Tata Aria hits rock bottom with March sales at 98 Units: LoCo Aria in the pipeline ?
2011 Tata Aria MPV Crossover

2011 Tata Aria MPV Crossover

Even as numerous Tata Aria MPV Test Mules continue to be spotted every day in and around Pune, here’s something that would be worrying Tata Motors’ top brass. The Tata Aria Crossover MPV has slipped rapidly over the past few months, registering dismal sales. In March 2011 however, the number has hit rock bottom at 98 units.

Ever since it was launched, the Tata Aria MPV, though feature packed and the highest quality Tata vehicle so far, never really took off. The main reason of course is the pricing which at almost INR 20 Lakhs, on-road Bangalore simply doesn’t make sense as Tata just does not enjoy the brand cred of say a Toyota Fortuner or a Honda CR-V.

This high pricing for a good product which the market simply is not already to accept due to it being from the Tata stable has led to this abysmal sales figure. For long, we’ve been in favor of a lower priced Tata Aria minus the Adapterra four wheel drive and some of the bells and whistles, to be priced at the range of the top end Innova.

Tata has not made any move towards this direction and hence we have plummeting sales, which is simply a big bummer for Tata considering the fact that the Aria MPV is a flagship product. This huge dampener for Tata Motors might just spur the Indian automaker to launch a low cost Aria MPV in the future devoid of some of the glam at a killer price tag to shock competition.

Tata has always been a value player in India right from the humble Tata Nano to the Tata Manza and even the Tata Safari MPV. The Aria MPV, however has deviated from this course hasn’t done too well. While a high voltage marketing campaign did the trick for the Nano, the Aria’s buyers being of a totally different segment might not fall just for a huge marketing campaign.

So it looks like a watered down, low price Aria is the only way out for Tata Motors. Coming to the lessons learnt from the Aria MPV’s current debacle, it would be very interesting to see how Mahindra positions it’s W201  World SUV which is primed for a launch very soon. Mahindra has been painting the town red with it’s RISE branding campaign. The big question remains whether all of this will rub off on the 2011 Mahindra W201 World SUV.
